Wikipedia's digital business card article repeats the 7 billion figure and adds 12,000 tonnes of paper annually, and both statements are tagged "citation needed" within the article itself.

The tonnage at least survives a sanity check. A European-standard 85 × 55 mm card on the 350 g/m² stock Wikipedia describes as typical weighs about 1.6 g. Seven billion of those comes to roughly 11,500 tonnes — close to the quoted 12,000. So the number is internally consistent, but it inherits whatever error is in the 7 billion figure it depends on.

Two counterpoints belong in any honest version of this argument. First, 12,000 tonnes of paper is a small quantity in global terms; business cards are not a major driver of paper demand. Second, most NFC cards are PVC or PET plastic with an embedded chip and antenna, so the environmental case is a trade, not a clean win. Japan is the clearest case. Japan Dev's 2026 guide states plainly that meishi "are still very much a thing", and that although digital forms are spreading — Sansan and Eight are the established local players — physical exchange remains preferred at in-person meetings.

The exchange is a defined ritual rather than a formality. Wikipedia's business card article documents it: present the card face up, held at the top two corners so the recipient can read it; receive it by the bottom two corners with both hands; read it carefully before thanking and bowing. Covering the name with your fingers is rude. The lower-status person offers their card below the other's. Folding a card, or putting one in a back pocket, is treated as an insult.

Producing a phone instead of a card at that moment is not efficient, it is a misread of the room. If you do business in Japan, carry meishi, and carry a case.

The other situations where paper wins

No signal. A QR code pointing at a hosted profile needs the recipient's phone to load a page. In a basement conference room, a rural site or a busy venue with saturated mobile data, it may not. This is the most common real-world failure and few providers mention it. Phones away. Secure facilities, hospital wards, some manufacturing floors and courtrooms all restrict phone use. A card in a pocket works regardless. A flat battery. Yours, this time. A passive NFC tag draws power from the reader, so a physical card still functions when your own phone is dead — but only if the reader phone works too. Contacts who do not scan. Not everyone points a camera at a code, and not everyone wants to. Insisting is a poor first impression. Leave-behinds. Cards pinned to a noticeboard, dropped in a prize draw bowl, left at a reception desk or stapled to an invoice do a job no digital card does. Where the object carries the message.
